the spotted gar part of gar family (lepisosteidae). notable being 1 of few extant fish species ganoid scales. have been known hybridize (and similar to) florida gar. occurs in quiet, clear pools , backwaters of lowland creeks, small large rivers, oxbow lakes, swamps, , sloughs. enters brackish waters.


the fish voracious predator, feeding on various kinds of fishes , crustaceans. lifespan l. oculatus varies between males , females. maximum lifespan gar 18 years. males mature @ age of 2 or three, whereas females mature @ 3 or 4 years old. females on average known larger , live longer males. females have less annual mortality rates.
