the first sikh pioneers came abbotsford area in 1905 , worked on farms , in lumber industry. first plans build temple made in 1908. after property situated on hill acquired settlers carried lumber local mill on backs hill construct gurdwara. when gurdwara opened on february 26, 1911 sikhs , non-sikhs across british columbia attended ceremony , local newspaper reported on event. temple 2 floor building, outside looked contemporary wood houses of seen in local frontier towns. features , decoration typical sikh architecture , design used in interior. first floor contains langar , common dining room community, , second floor contains prayer hall. building extended twice in 1932 , in 1960s. until 1975 gurdawa belonged khalsa diwan society vancouver (founded in 1905), transferred khalsa diwan society abbotsford, wished greater autonomy. in 1983, new, larger, temple different architectural style built on opposite side of road. old temple designated national historic site in 2002, designated declared prime minister jean chrétien @ ceremony on july 26 of 2002. in 2007, temple renovated , reopened. 2011, creation of small museum in basement planned in connection temple s 100 years anniversary. mark centennial (1911-2011) of gur sikh temple, prime minister stephen harper inaugurated sikh heritage museum in ground floor of temple.


on may 19, 2017 prime minister justin trudeau visited canada 150 exhibit @ sikh heritage museum.
