with outbreak of korean war in june 1950, macon ordered reactivated. had entered decommissioned status in april (3 months earlier) reactivation went extremely quickly, , in reality consisted minor repairs, loading crew, stores, , ammunition. recommissioned @ philadelphia 16 october 1950, capt. victor dismukes long in command and, upon completion of refresher training, became flagship of cruiser division 6 in atlantic. patrolled in eastern mediterranean during suez crisis of 1956; took part in international naval review celebrating 350th anniversary of foundation of jamestown, virginia, 12 june 1957; , participated in nato exercise operation strikeback , conducted in north sea , arctic ocean in september 1957.


besides these duties, macon continued receive experimental equipment testing throughout period. having received missile equipment during january–march 1956, launched first regulus missile atlantic fleet cruiser on 8 may while anchored off north carolina coast, , continued tests of missile completed cycle of atlantic fleet operations. on night of 19–20 january 1959, macon, steaming cartagena marseille, diverted course , sped aid of burning italian merchant ship maria amata. macon s crew fought flames, ship beyond salvage. macon carried merchantman s crew valencia, spain.


uss macon ca-132 participated in operation inland seas (or sea) united states navy operation celebrate completion of saint lawrence seaway in 1959. end of 1959 macon had conducted 6 midshipmen summer cruises , had spent fall , winter season of every year 6th fleet.


the following january, macon, carrying u.s. navy band, departed norfolk goodwill cruise south american ports. while on tour, 19 members of band perished in plane crash en route perform @ state dinner brazilian president juscelino kubitschek. argentine naval personnel participating, macon s crew held memorial services in buenos aires harbor on 28 february. completing cruise @ rio de janeiro on 10 march, macon returned boston resume cycle of operations atlantic fleet.


macon placed out of commission in reserve @ philadelphia on 10 march 1961. stricken on 1 november 1969, , sold union minerals , alloys corporation, new york city, on 5 july 1973 , scrapped in port newark, new jersey.
