in 1879 in helsby lewis started own company in electrical engineering. next year invented , patented self-binding insulator electric telegraph wire, started manufacture. device got adopted across europe , in united states. after had travelled united states sell american rights, extended company s work other branches of electrical engineering, merged neighbouring company form telegraph manufacturing co., limited, years managing director.


in 1892 lewis became manager of electrical engineering company w.t. goolden & co. in london, specialised in mining machinery. after 2 years, in 1894, joined rolling mills company p. r. jackson & co., start electrical engineering department, becoming general manager of entire company. in 1900 became director of brush electrical engineering company, emile garcke had been managing director since 1891. in summer of 1901 died attack of apoplexy.


lewis member of institution of civil engineers, institution of mechanical engineers , institution of electrical engineers. elected fellow of royal society of edinburgh, , in 1898 elected member of iron , steel institute.
