early life

tzuke s family relocated poland england in 1920s, , changed surname tzuke myers. mother, jean silverside, television actress, , father, sefton myers, successful property developer managed artists , singers—most notably andrew lloyd webber , tim rice during writing of jesus christ superstar. when tzuke embarked on singing career, decided reclaim family s polish name stage name.

educated in visual arts, performing arts, , music, tzuke performed in folk clubs age of 15. meeting mike paxman in 1975 turning point , began collaborate. under name tzuke & paxo, secured recording contract , duo released single, these laws , produced tony visconti.

early success

tzuke s career solo artist began in 1977, when signed elton john s label rocket record company. first single on rocket, , released in 1978. notable success, stay me till dawn , released in 1979. track, co-written mike paxman, became top 20 hit in uk in summer of 1979 , top 10 hit in australia , featured on tzuke s 1979 debut album, welcome cruise, top 20 hit. in 2002, stay me till dawn chosen british public in poll of 50 best british songs 1952–2002 (ranking @ number 39). song sampled mylo in song need tonite , taken 2004 album destroy rock & roll.

tzuke s second album, sportscar (1980), charted higher debut album (reaching no.7 in uk) , contained 1 single living on coast failed chart. both albums certified gold british phonographic industry in 1981. tzuke became elton john s support act north american tour, , went on release 1 more album on rocket, phoenix (1981), made uk top 20.

1982-1995

in 1982, tzuke signed chrysalis records , released fourth album, shoot moon. although album reached uk top 20, tzuke s last album so. 3 singles taken album (including 7 picture disc release m not loser ), none chart hits. tzuke completed 57 date tour of uk, culminating headline act @ year s glastonbury festival. performance recorded tv special itv. several performances tour recorded , released @ end of 1982 double album, road noise: official bootleg.

in 1983, rocket issued compilation album, best of judie tzuke, , released track black furs single (the original version of on tzuke s 1981 album phoenix). september 1983 saw release of tzuke s fifth studio album, ritmo (spanish rhythm ). album of departure previous work, more electronic feel. single jeannie no preceded album , had radio airplay, did not chart. edit , extended remix of track issued on 7 , 12 single formats (tzuke s first). subsequent single how feel? did not fare better, , album peaked @ no. 26 in uk. neither album nor singles released internationally.

during autumn 1983, tzuke toured series of larger (but fewer) venues. after 2 albums, tzuke left chrysalis records. wanting take greater control of work, signed small independent legacy records release of next album. new single, , released in october 1984. cover of lesser-known marvin gaye track, version turned rather sedate piece grinding electro production. peaked @ no. 92 in uk, , several different versions of track released on 7 , 12 formats. in march 1985, ll 1 issued new single tzuke s forthcoming sixth album, cat out, recorded @ home studio , released in june 1985. single peaked @ no. 97, while album peaked @ no.35 on uk album chart. third single, love fire , released shortly afterwards, again several versions on 7 , 12 formats, though failed chart. september 1985 saw fourth single album, side of heaven , coincided tzuke s national concert tour, although failed chart. show @ fairfield halls in croydon recorded television special which, several years later, issued cd/dvd release.

following muted reception of cat out, tzuke signed major label, polydor records, in 1987. began working on seventh album, though took time off in june 1987 when gave birth daughter, bailey. however, release of album delayed further after polydor first requested tzuke work producer of choice rather usual team. polydor later agreed allow tzuke re-record entire album own team of paul muggleton (her husband) , mike paxman. album, turning stones, released in april 1989, peaking @ no. 57 in uk album chart. preceded single ll go dreaming , had peaked @ no.96 several weeks earlier. further problems arose between tzuke , polydor led last minute cancellation of 1989 tour, enraging fans had turned venues. apologised fans, , when appeared guest on radio 1 s friday evening record review show round table.

in 1990, switched columbia records (cbs). in august, released new single, cover version of beach boys classic god knows . despite single being issued in various formats (7 , 7 poster wrap, limited edition numbered 10 , 12 , cassette-single , cd-single) , video being made, song failed gain chart success. limited promo 12 issued of remix made dj judge jules. song featured in itv documentary series recording techniques, tzuke , producers mike paxman , paul muggleton showed how song had been constructed using samples of voice transposed synthesizer range. eighth album, left hand talking, released columbia in may 1991.

promotion album had begun in march when 3-track promo had been issued independent record stores, , tzuke made 2 live performances @ london s shaw theatre in april. these performances first time neither muggleton, paxman or bob noble part of live band. outlaws released single columbia in june 1991, neither album nor single made impact upon charts despite radio 1 dj richard skinner making outlaws record of week on saturday afternoon show. tenure columbia ended after 1 album.

tzuke signed small independent label release of ninth album, wonderland, released in september 1992 essential records (a subsidiary of now-defunct castle communications). 2 singles album, wonderland , fly , performed on bbc1 lunchtime programme pebble mill @ 1 in november 1992, after tzuke had performed concert tour of smaller venues in october , november. neither album nor singles charted, despite featuring talents of brian may queen , nigel kennedy on violin. stated in later interview (used in inner booklet of 2002 reissue of album) wonderland album felt proud of songwriter. august 1995 saw release of 2 albums. bbc issued recording of tzuke s radio 1 in concert performance 1981, , polygram issued compilation album entitled stay me till dawn drew on tzuke s first 3 albums released on rocket records tracks turning stones album on polydor records. album included 4 single remixes had not been available on cd.

1996-present

tzuke released tenth studio album, under angels, in october 1996 on own label big moon records. album previewed 2 dates @ london s jazz cafe in august 1996 , in dublin in october year. 3 tours promote album, playing @ on 30 venues, took place in january/february, june , november 1997. recordings tour culminated in live album, on moon (1997).

in 1998, tzuke released eleventh studio album, secret agent, again on own label, big moon. bob harris of bbc radio 2 included 1 of album s tracks, tonight , on compilation cd bob harris presents... (vol.1). in 2000, tzuke gained rights first 3 albums recorded rocket records , reissued them on cd via big moon. named tour later year phoenix tour , reference last rocket records album, phoenix. following came new live album, 6 days before flood (2000), , new studio album queen secret keeper (2001). live album, drive live, released in 2002.

tzuke released album of covers, beauty of hindsight, in september 2003. self-promoted tour in september ended 2 nights @ london s bush hall. 2 dates in march 2004 played @ london s cabot hall in canary wharf part of docklands music festival , following night @ dartford s mick jagger centre, previewing 2 new tracks— addiction (never released later part of b.e.d. s ver. 1.0 , ver. 1.5 albums tzuke on backing vocals) , before found heart .

2004 saw tzuke release thirteenth album, end of beginning, saw returning heavier rock style on many of tracks , use of strings first time since 1981. of album played part of tour in october of year. 2002 pop idol runner-up gareth gates joined tzuke on stage sing backing vocals on track bully . pair first introduced lucie silvas had been 1 of tzuke s backing singers , had written material gates. silvas , tzuke co-wrote of songs silvas platinum-selling 2004 album breathe in, , co-wrote 4 tracks silvas 2006 album same side. tzuke provided backing vocals.

on 18 july 2009, tzuke took part in teenage cancer benefit concert @ kilworth house, leicestershire alongside lucie silvas. performed 3 tracks solo ( love me no more , stay me till dawn , if (when go) ) accompanied string quartet. returned stage encore performance alongside silvas, singing co-written place hide duet.

judie announced in 2013 work had commenced on new album entitled woman overboard. unfortunately, due judie being diagnosed cancer work on album halted.

due popularity , positive feedback of song club , obvious delays woman overboard album judie decided continue issue song club 2, starting in may 2014. again album released monthly downloads , cd issue in may 2015, again purchases treated several bonus tracks. song club 2 had more rockier , dance orientated feel predecessor.

may , june 2014 saw judie on uk tour entitled woman overboard. unfortunately, further health issues, time voice meant several dates rescheduled. throughout tour judie had battled laryngitis , reluctant disappoint fans, ticket sales had been extremely successful. battling nerves of performing during 1 noticeable sold out performance @ london s union chapel, mid performance voice gave way, of daughters sharing lead duties, , fans in audience completed truncated performance. received 3 standing ovations night.judie later confirmed performance acted catalyst beating crippling stage fright.

starting in late 2014 judie commenced on new approach touring called songs , stories. judie chose play smaller venues clocking 54 dates during 2015 , on 40 in 2016 across length , breadth of country. dates sold out , twitter , facebook comments reflected hundreds of people re-finding music again. format of songs , stories dates sing cross range of old , new songs spanning careers interspersed anecdotes relating songs , inviting people in audience ask questions. these performances saw judie accompanied 1 or both of daughters on backing vocals, graham kearns and/or chaz thorogood on guitar , on occasions other friends , musicians accompanying her.
