Zeta Ford Zetec engine

1.8 liter zetec-e engine

the first zetec-branded engine zeta family, introduced 1992 model year powering fifth generation of european ford escort, third generation orion , mk.3 fiesta. engine available in 1.6 , 1.8 liter versions 2.0 liter version appearing in 1993 in all-new mondeo. zeta name dropped in favour of zetec when italian car maker lancia threatened sue ford trademark infringement. codename zeta used design of cylinder head. number of different systems evaluated, , each 1 had different codename using greek alphabet. zeta concept winner , 4-valve-per-cylinder, dohc design used head of replacement cvh in europe , us. original manufacturing plan involved replacing dearborn manufactured cvh zeta. resulted in need retain of architecture of cvh block. however, later in development process, plan changed , chihuahua engine plant in mexico rebuilt allow manufacture of engines. europe decision taken build zetas in bridgend (replacing cvh) , in cologne. (2.0l) , european base engines identical. however, crucially, management insisted engines had freewheeling , or non-interference engine design. fuel economy penalty freewheeling system (around 1–2%) considered great european engines. result engines used different pistons. difference engines featured sinter forged connecting rods versus conventional cast rods in europe.

early versions of engine had problem sticking valves – far more evident in uk (and in cold climates), driving style earlier gear changes more common on continent – unless special ford formulation of oil used. after small changes in 1995 fix problem engine known zetec-e. engine received plastic inlet manifold , egr derived mondeo.

the zetec had redesign in 1998. version, zetec-r, had two-piece crankcase helped damp out noise , vibration, conventional tappets shims rather hydraulic ones, , longer connecting rods lower piston compression height. engine used in turbocharged form in focus rs , had 212 bhp (158 kw; 215 ps) (dubbed duratec rs). used in focus st170 cylinder head modified cosworth variable valve timing on inlet cam , had 170 bhp (127 kw; 172 ps).

the zetec can identified having silver cam cover dohc 16v on bottom left. zetec-e has zetec 16v on bottom left, , zetec-r has black plastic cam cover. focus rs , st170 (svt) both zetec-r engines, despite being branded duratec.

production of zeta family lasted september 1991 through december 2004. displacement ranged 1.6 l 2.0 l. replaced in applications mazda mzr-based duratec 20, though zetec-se engines used replacements on lower end. ford power products sells zeta in 1.8 l , 2.0 l versions mvh.

the 2.0l zetec engine has seen issues. although block , cylinder head thermally stable, coolant outlet housing thermostat not. housing used in 2000–2004 model year ford focus , 2001–2004 model year ford escape 16-valve dohc engine made abs plastic. bolted surface of cylinder head on right side of engine 3 bolts. mating surface seals cylinder head rubber o-ring style gasket. o-ring held in place lip on housing prone cracking. immediate inner portion of housing exhibit pitting , bubbling. on time, pieces of lip break off, releasing plastic fragments cooling system. these fragments have not been known cause severe damage cooling system damaged lip on housing cause o-ring seal rupture. allows coolant leak out onto upper transmission bell housing. failure can result in severe loss of coolant.

in 2010, focus svt owner in minnesota identified fix housing issue. involves use of more durable housing made earlier model of zetecs. lighter housing (still specified ford parts) has not been corrected design flaw. has short service life , cause of repeated failures. of september 2013, ford sells both versions of housing. better version lists $20 more (usa) , has barbed hose fittings, opposed smooth fittings of problematic fitting. fixes have been identified housing used focus svt simpler housing used ordinary foci.

the 2.0l version in north american ford contour/mercury mystique closely related replacement previous cvh engine used in ford escort.

a 2.0 l crate zetec-r has shipping weight of 100kg dry (220 lbs)

the camshaft timing of 2.0l engine is:

intake: open 11 degrees btdc, close 59 degrees abdc, duration 250

exhaust: open 55 degrees bbdc, close 7 degrees atdc, duration 242

overlap: 18 degrees
