after graduation, bianco spent time in europe. upon returning united states, friend college invited bianco los angeles, california play in band. bianco moved los angeles in spring of 2000. played bass , wrote songs group until disbanded. bianco decided learn play guitar, refine singing skills , set assembling band of own. rented room in west los angeles $80 month , practiced until felt comfortable sharing music. began attending open mic nights around los angeles, performing @ least 3 nights week. 1 evening attended songwriter night @ small coffee shop in hollywood called hotel café. after, bianco invited open gary jules.

the hotel café has grown small coffee shop considered 1 of finest venues in los angeles. hotel café has been credited renaissance of los angeles singer/songwriter movement began in 2000s. initiated gary jules’ idea of creating supportive space artists hone craft, coupled appropriate timing , genuine need, musicians began gravitating hotel café. in cooperative effort, bianco, along fellow musicians gary jules, cary brothers , owners marko schafer , max mamikunian, worked transform space, book, promote , perform shows. efforts received big promotional push legendary kcrw music director nic harcourt. today, hotel café considered 1 of best venues in los angeles, noted superior sound, intimate setting , quality of acts perform on bill.

bianco regular performer @ hotel café , residencies popular favorite. playing full band, bianco’s sets have reputation being sold-out, high energy , sexually charged events. on occasion, bianco has rented catwalk , invited burlesque dancer friends perform , throw feathers during set. bianco known eliminating traditional fourth wall between audience , performer leading band center of audience during song “sing” encouraging audience participation, culminates in sing-along.

on march 4, 2008, bianco’s album “sing” first album released on hotel café records label. bianco has said of songs on album had been composed on piano in room @ hotel café after regular club hours.

cary brothers credited initiating , producing hotel cafe tour began in 2005. bianco has been included in roster of headlining performers on tour since inception. 1 of few of hotel café artists has participated in both , european legs of tour. other notable artists have participated in event are: jessie baylin, sara bareilles, cary brothers, holly conlan, william fitzsimmons, greg laswell, imogen heap, gary jules, tom mcrae, mandy moore, ingrid michaelson, meiko, alexi murdoch, jay nash, katy perry, joe purdy, joshua radin, buddy, kt tunstall, butch walker, weepies, dan wilson, brian wright , rachael yamagata.

the band

bianco s band consists of matt demerritt (aka matty d) on saxophone, piano , flute, brad gordon (aka professor beeg) on keyboard, trumpet, clarinet , accordion, kenny lyon on electric guitar, jason pipkin (aka pip) on drums, josef zimmerman (aka joe ez) on upright bass.

bianco’s full band established 2003. first official member join band drummer, jason pipkin. bianco met pipkin @ gig day pipkin arrived in california texas. bianco asked kenny lyon (then friend) suggest bass player , introduced josef zimmerman. bianco began looking saxophone player , zimmerman suggested matt demerritt. after seeing bianco’s show, multi-instrumentalist brad gordon joined crew offering play keyboard, trumpet, clarinet , accordion. after seeing bianco’s show @ mint in los angeles, kenny lyon decided join band.

in 2014, bianco formed 12 piece band forniquette. bianco describes sound modern brothel music. members of forniquette jim bianco (vocals), alex budman (clarinet/tenor), jon flower (bass), jordan katz (trumpet), phil krohnengold (accordion), elizabeth lea (trombone), danny levin (trumpet), chris lovejoy (percussion), nick mancini (vibes), david moyer (baritone sax), jason pipkin (drums), david ralicke (trombone).

in 2003, bianco entered “acoustic live” music competition. out of more 500 applicants, bianco placed first. contest has been billed elimination style acoustic battle of bands. submissions judged based on songwriting, performance, musicianship , originality.
on september 2, 2004, bianco , band appeared on nic harcourt’s esteemed morning becomes eclectic radio program in support of release of handsome devil. performed 7 songs on course of 2 sets , bianco interviewed nic harcourt.
in 2004, rca recording artist tunde baiyewu, member of lighthouse family, covered bianco’s song “long way home.” recording released bonus track on baiyewu’s self-titled solo album, tunde.
bianco has been regular performer in showcases @ sxsw musical festival since 2002.
bianco 1 of eleven los angeles singer/songwriters invited getty museum participate in special friday evening performance called drawing on la: songs taddeo zuccaro . concert presented in conjunction exhibit taddeo , federico zuccaro: artist-brothers in renaissance rome. on december 14, 2007, bianco played piano , sang song “thundercloud.”
on february 22, 2008, bianco’s song “belong” featured kcrw’s top tune.

in 2002, keiji matsumoto, japanese independent record store owner, discovered “well within reason” online , contacted bianco selling album in store café goattee. album sold out , release of “handsome devil” in 2004, matsumoto booked bianco on tour across japan in february 2005. accompanied brad gordon , jason pipkin, bianco played on country. in 2006, bianco released album steady in japan. bianco, again brad gordon , jason pipkin, toured japan in april 2006 , returned third tour in june 2009. in april 2010, bianco returned japan acoustic tour, playing 6 shows in 5 cities. in march 2012, bianco returned japan 7 city tour gary jules.
