after nelson s death in 1805 @ battle of trafalgar, annuity sir william s estate have ensured comfortable, if modest, lifestyle emma. exhausted small pension , fell debt. nelson had willed estate brother; gave merton place emma, depleted finances trying keep monument him. in spite of nelson s status national hero, instructions left government provide emma , horatia ignored. showered honours on nelson s brother instead.


emma spent year in virtual debtors prison, in company of horatia, before moving france (despite ongoing napoleonic war) try escape creditors. turning drinking, living in poverty in calais, died in january 1815, aged 49, of amoebic dysentery – illness contracted during years in naples. sir william hamilton had suffered amoebic dysentery. emma buried in calais grave subsequently lost due wartime destruction.


horatia subsequently married rev. philip ward , lived until 1881. had ten children: horatio nelson (born 8 december 1822); eleanor phillipa (born april 1824); marmaduke philip smyth (born 27 may 1825); john james stephen (13 february 1827 – 1829); nelson (born 8 may 1828); william george (born 8 april 1830); edmund nelson (1831); horatia nelson (born 24 november 1833), philip (born may 1834) , caroline (born january 1836).


horatia never publicly acknowledged daughter of emma hamilton.
