north began final round one-stroke lead on gary player. 2 months earlier, player had won masters blistering 64 in final round. history, however, not repeat itself, time around player struggled 77 (+6) , finished in tie 6th. north owned four-shot lead on snead heading back-nine, , after birdies @ 11 , 13 appeared have championship wrapped up. bogey @ 14, however, combined double-bogey @ 15 , birdie dave stockton @ same hole dropped lead one. stockton, however, missed 18-footer (5.5 m) par @ 18, increasing north s lead two.


snead had chance birdie @ last after tee shot skipped off water , onto fairway, missed birdie putt. needing bogey @ 18 win, north s drive found rough. hit second shot fairway, third found greenside bunker. needing up-and-down, played sand shot 5 feet (1.5 m), , after backing off twice, sank bogey putt one-stroke win.
