in 1950, reynolds won 16 games, though pitched bone chips in elbow entire season. remarkable 1951 season began under difficult conditions. floating chips in elbow prevented him throwing single pitch in spring training. resigned having surgery have cost him @ least half of season. dr. george bennett of johns hopkins university recommended against surgery. reynolds appeared in first game 1 week after season started.


on july 12 , september 28, 1951, reynolds threw no-hitters. first american league pitcher throw 2 no-hitters in season , second player in baseball history, after johnny vander meer threw consecutive no-hitters in 1938. still mlb record no-hitters in single season, record reynolds , vander meer share virgil trucks (1952), nolan ryan (1973), roy halladay (2010), , max scherzer (2015).


his first no-hitter, on july 12, 1951, 1–0 defeat of former team, indians. gene woodling s solo home run run scored during game. reynolds retired last 17 indians faced. 4 indians reached base; walked 3 , bobby Ávila reached on error phil rizzuto. third shutout of cleveland season. bob feller threw strong game , didn t allow hit until sixth inning, when mickey mantle doubled. feller threw complete game , allowed 4 hits. feller had thrown no-hitter eleven days earlier.


his second no-hitter, on september 28, 1951, 8–0 defeat of boston red sox allowed yankees clinch @ least tie of american league pennant. yankees clinched pennant in second half of september 28 double-header. reynolds struck out 9 hitters. walked four, not 1 boston batter seemed close getting hit. 2 outs in ninth inning, ted williams hit pop fly yankees catcher yogi berra. berra dropped ball , prolonged @ bat against dangerous williams. reynolds remained calm, telling berra, don t worry yogi, ll him again. reynolds correct , williams once again popped up, berra caught one. in spring of 1953, stengel made reynolds predominantly reliever, although notched 15 starts , 5 complete games, because of reynolds ability pitch without rest , use blazing fastball late in yankees afternoon games when shadows crept on mound. however, reynolds injured in july when team bus on way train station after game in philadelphia—robbing reynolds of control. during 53 world series—his final one—reynolds started opener @ home , struggled because of injury, recovered appear in 2 more reliever—winning sixth , final game of series.


reynolds led al in shutouts in 1951 seven. in 1952, had greatest single season performance. won twenty games time in career (against 8 losses). led american league in earned run average (2.06), strikeouts (160), , shutouts (6). saved 6 games.


he played in mlb all-star games of 1949, 50, 52, 53, , 54 (no official all-star selection or game held in 1945). yankees, reynolds reached world series in 1947, 49, 50, 51, 52, , 53. reynolds had 7–2 record 2.79 era on 77 innings in world series. made 6 relief appearances in world series, recording win or save in each of them, including clinching games of 1950, 1952 , 1953 series. batted .308 in 26 at-bats in world series appearances.


reynolds won hickok belt top professional athlete of year in 1951. voted player of year in 1951 new york chapter of baseball writers association of america, , finished third in voting al valuable player award, behind berra , ned garver of st. louis browns. in 1952, mvp runner-up bobby shantz of philadelphia athletics.


reynolds suffered injury when yankees charter bus crashed overpass in philadelphia during 1953 season. retired after following season result of injury.
