a film based on novel has been mired in development hell since 1997. @ 1 point, reports surfaced film slated 2008 release date , made new line cinema had bought rights alten. names attached project included jan de bont , guillermo del toro. however, in july 2007, new line cancelled production. steve alten had said once relationship new line over, taking property elsewhere. rights have indeed reverted alten, film has remained in development hell.


alten made relatively recent comment on sparsely updated website in 2011 has given significant , yet cryptic update status of film project. along announcement releasing prequel novella called meg: origins, alten indicated holding release of next entry in series meg: night stalkers time release of film. while no official information yet exists on film, may indicate progress on film adaptation may further along believed. on january 2, 2015, alten appeared on coast coast radio george noory , said film based on meg on track.


on june 16, 2015 announced eli roth direct film adaptation. left project due creative differences. on march 3, 2016, comingsoon.net reported director jon turteltaub (national treasure) has since been in talks helm movie adaptation of steve alten s meg. turteltaub attached walt disney pictures s small world movie.


on april 14, 2016, various media outlets reported action star jason statham taking lead role of jonas taylor in upcoming film. in june 2016, steve alten confirmed john cena had joined cast of film. in july 2016, jessica mcnamee , ruby rose joined cast of film.


the film due released on march 2, 2018, release date has been pushed 10 august 2018.
