history
formation duo (1991–1995)

vertical horizon formed in 1991 georgetown university undergrads matthew scannell , keith kane. performances included cover sets of artists such simon & garfunkel in campus leavey center food court. in 1992, after graduation georgetown, duo relocated boston , self-released debut album there , again, recorded in scannell s old high school, deerfield academy, on period of few weeks. scannell , kane split songwriting , lead vocal duties.

scannell , kane toured duo next few years, appearing similar bands, such jackopierce. next album 1995 s running on ice, produced john alagia (dave matthews band, john mayer), doug derryberry, , scannell. though still largely acoustic based, running on ice incorporated other musicians , guests, including derryberry, jackopierce, , carter beauford of dave matthews band on drums, giving album more of full band sound. 2 songs, kane s wash away , scannell s man santa , featured on second aware records compilation album.

full band formation , live stages (1996–1997)

more touring followed through 1996 vertical horizon joined drummer ed toth. live stages released in 1997, , featured 4 new songs , more of emphasis on electric guitar. time, band explicit in intent find major record label; band members have said no accident first track of live stages opens sounds of large cheering audience. wishes came true, , band signed sony bmg music entertainment/rca records. in 1998 band held auditions permanent bassist. sean hurley, student @ berklee college of music, impressed , officially invited join vertical horizon.

everything want (1998–2000)

vertical horizon s indie albums began attract record executives several record labels during late 1990s. band signed rca records in 1998.

rca re-released vertical horizon s independent albums, new packaging , graphics. before rca re-release, band s first 3 albums had sold 70,000 combined units.

the band s first effort rca records 1999 s want, producers ben grosse, mark endert, , david bendeth (paramore, vegas). first single, , mildly successful on modern rock stations. second single, want , proved breakout single skyrocketed top of charts , became 5th played song on radio in 2000. third single, re god , did , released live performance on charity album live in x lounge iii. featured in movie bruce almighty. fourth single, best ever had (grey sky morning) , received moderate airplay. in 2005, remake of song become top 10 country hit gary allan. band, had been touring since album released, continued touring until 2001. after taking break, band came studio record follow-up, hoped released enough take advantage of huge popularity of want. since 2001, album certified double platinum riaa, having sold 2,000,000 copies in us.

go , go 2.0 (2001–2005)

after delays, announced new album, go, released in september 2002. go released while rca going through major restructuring , result, album received little support label. album s first single, m still here , did moderately well, when failed match popularity of want , rca did little promote album , such, no videos produced , label didn t album s supporting tour. scannell upset rca didn t support album, saying without label behind us, floundered , sort of withered on vine, heartbreaker.

eventually band went on short tour in 2003, , announced go (produced john shanks) released year late, in september 2003. larger tour started in august, leading release of album.

in middle of 2004, band ended relationship rca. new deal hybrid recordings inked in 2005, plans re-release go in summer, including additional song, better when re not there , not present on original rca release. song forever sent radio ahead of release promotion.

in 2005, longtime drummer ed toth left band join doobie brothers. since various drummers began playing vertical horizon including blair sinta, ron lavella, craig mcintyre, , jason sutter.

burning days (2006–2010)

burning days released on september 22, 2009, , group s first release after five-year hiatus. singer/songwriter matt scannell has said burning days marks shift in songwriting, both musically , lyrically. according scannell, there lot more variety , quite few different artistic moods on record - different sonic landscapes... lot of these songs feel faster tempo we’ve ever done before.

neil peart of canadian rock band rush plays drums on 3 songs on album, save me myself , welcome bottom , , . co-write between matt scannell , neil peart, peart writing lyrics , scannell writing music. scannell asked peart if interested in playing drums on song, , peart responded, no 1 else can play drums on — won’t let else play drums on it. have play drums on it.

on june 23, 2008, during duo concert in lincolnshire, illinois, scannell debuted new song called save me myself off upcoming album. also, on june 26, 2008, in downers grove, illinois, vertical horizon debuted new song called said , done off upcoming album. song added playlist on band s myspace page on october 20, 2008.

on june 2, 2010, matt scannell announced via facebook keith not touring vertical horizon. ve been friends long time please join me in supporting solo , boys gone wild performances. on june 3, 2010, kane confirmed departure band, saying not touring vertical horizon shift focus solo career. thrilled writing first solo album working on collaborations brian fechino , chardy mcewan, , friends stroke 9 in our band boys gone wild . guitarist steve fekete has taken on backing vocals/rhythm guitar role in band, 3 slots in band besides scannell have rotated degree.

in late june 2010, lucky 1 released radio single.

echoes underground (2011–present)

vertical horizon announced in june 2011 had begun recording new material new album. album, echoes underground, released on october 8, 2013. peart returned guest artist on drums tracks instamatic , south winter . in june 2017, scannell announced @ concert in fairfax, va, new album forthcoming summer 2017.
