lore has in 12th century, amahawin, ilonggo iloilo, conquered neighboring barangays on leyte’s western shore , extended territory present limits of inopacan, hindang, bato, , matalom. formed settlement , named hilongos, because inhabitants ilonggos.


in 1710, jesuits created residence there. in 1737, according redondo 1886:207, hilongos parish before year. however, braganza (1965) claims hilongos became parish in 1737. date corresponded establishment of town.(tantuico 1964:41)


1754 date of oldest parish books (deaths) of 1884.


in 1768, jesuits ceded hilongos augustinians. in 1774–79, augustinians established schools in hilongos. in 1784, palompon, hilongos visita, became independent parish.


in 1862, manicar led revolt @ barrio sta. margarita.


in 1873, leovio magia led revolt. unlike towns of eastern leyte, ceded franciscans in 1843, towns along leyte’s western coast fell 1 one under seculars.


in december 28, 2016, 2 explosions rocked small town during town fiesta. explosion occurred in barangay central poblacion boxing match being held. @ least 34 people residents injured , brought hilongos district hospital , other nearby hospitals. officials said ied used in attack. no suspects identified.
