kindred s rehabilitation division serves both kindred , non-kindred sites. services organized 2 operating segments: skilled nursing rehabilitation services (srs), provide freestanding skilled nursing centers; , hospital rehabilitation services (hrs), provide inpatient program management , therapy services hospital units , outpatient services hospital based satellite programs. in june 2011, kindred combined previous rehabilitation division new acquisition of rehabcare, renaming division after acquisition.


in january 2016, kindred healthcare inc. , subsidiary rehabcare group inc. agreed pay $125 million settle whistleblower lawsuit on medicare therapy claim overbilling. settlement ended investigation claims brought against companies former rehabcare therapists in 2011 lawsuit. suit claimed rehabcare routinely scheduled skilled nursing facility residents higher levels of therapy needed, resulting in therapy services not reasonable or necessary, or never occurred.
