History Third Churchill ministry



the conservative party returned power in united kingdom after victory @ 1951 general election following 6 years in opposition. first majority conservative government since stanley baldwin s 1924–1929 ministry. winston churchill became prime minister second time. churchill s government had several prominent figures , up-and-coming stars. rab butler appointed chancellor of exchequer while sir anthony eden returned foreign secretary. noted scottish lawyer sir david maxwell fyfe, had gained fame prosecutor @ nuremberg trials, became home secretary. remained in post until 1954, when ennobled viscount kilmuir , appointed lord chancellor. future conservative prime minister harold macmillan achieved first major cabinet position when made minister of defence in 1954.


gwilym lloyd george, younger son of former liberal party leader david lloyd george, replaced sir david maxwell fyfe home secretary in 1954. florence horsbrugh became first woman hold cabinet post in conservative government when appointed minister of education in 1951. several figures later achieve high offices held first governmental posts. these included: future prime minister edward heath, future chancellors reginald maudling, peter thorneycroft , iain macleod , future foreign secretary lord carrington. other notable figures in government john profumo, bill deedes, david ormsby-gore , marquess of salisbury.


the churchill ministry concerned international affairs, widening cold war , decolonialisation (especially mau mau uprising , malayan emergency).


despite suffering stroke in 1953, churchill remained in office until april 1955, when resigned @ age of eighty. succeeded ambitious protégé , deputy, sir anthony eden, reached post had coveted long; although premiership last less 2 years.
