rupert established monastery dedicated saint peter @ site of late antique church in former iuvavum. st peter s abbey received large estates in flachgau (rupertiwinkel) , tennengau regions hands of duke theodon ii, including several brine wells , salt evaporation ponds earned iuvavum german name salzburg. in 711 rupert founded cella maximiliana in pongau region, later town of bischofshofen. niece erentrude established bendictine nunnery @ nearby nonnberg 713. in 739 archbishop boniface, blessing of pope gregory iii, completed work of saint rupert , raised salzburg bishopric, placed under primatial see of archdiocese of mainz. st. vergilius, abbot of st. peter s since 749, had quarrelled st. boniface on existence of antipodes. nevertheless became bishop 767, had first cathedral erected in 774 , began valuable book liber confraternitatum (confraternity book of st. peter).
