the 2 osmastons meet


the area called osmaston triangle, area of derby bounded railway line, osmaston road , osmaston park road, 2 roads joining @ spider bridge in allenton. in 2003 major project called osmaston housing improvement zone approved, designed improve condition of local housing. work included of older, privately owned terraced houses in area 20 empty properties brought use , 93 low-income families helped essential repairs.


rolls-royce

from 1908 till 2007, osmaston main location of manufacturing unit of rolls-royce, until facility moved 2 km south sinfin. nightingale road, main works site opened in 1908 manufacture rolls-royce silver ghost rear of site had test track called miniature brooklands used prove cars.


during world war ii, on monday 27 july 1942, @ 7.50 am lone dornier 217 attacked rolls-royce factory in area, making merlin engines , vital war effort. aircraft, @ low level, hit central stores , houses opposite 4 bombs, 3 550kg , 1 250 kg. plane turned, strafed civilians in osmaston area , shot down barrage balloon before returning base. twenty-three people killed, 12 in works remainder in neighbouring houses in hawthorn, abingdon , handel street. among killed arthur bacon former derby county football player. further 120 people injured.


on 27 july 2017 memorial died unveiled behind marble hall. guest of honour sheila dixon 9 years old when 1 of bombs impacted 2 doors down home, killing friend dennis regan..


in april 2009 derby city council agreed buy old rolls-royce site in move towards ongoing regeneration of osmaston.
