the paradise closed in 1951 , orchestra hall sat vacant twenty years until became object of renovation plan in late 1960s. paul ganson, assistant principal bassoonist of dso, spearheaded movement rediscover hall , raise funds restore it. renovation work started in 1970 , continued 2 decades, costing $6.8 million. original building required extensive renovations including: new stage, new seating, plaster , lath work, , restoration of historical decorations. of restoration work completed goal of maintaining fine acoustic properties hall historically known for. hall added national register of historic places in 1971. dso moved orchestra hall in 1989.


additional work on hall done in summer months of 2002 , 2003 part of creation of new max m. fisher music center, or max , known. work included renovations original facility expansion houses additional lobbies , reception areas, dressing rooms , storage facilities, rehearsal space , 450-seat venue more intimate performances.
