in 1996, o neill won seat on ohio eleventh district court of appeals 50% of vote. served 1997 2007, when resigned run congress.


2004 ohio supreme court campaign

in 2004 special election finish term of ohio supreme court justice resigned, o neill lost terrence o donnell 21%.



2006 ohio supreme court campaign

in 2006, o neill ran against o donnell again full-term on ohio supreme court. o neill lost again, on 17%.

2010 congressional campaign

on february 6, 2010, o neill announced running again democratic nominee ohio s 14th congressional district against latourette. o neill stated during campaign desire expand greater cleveland rapid transit rail system. o neill lost election on 33%.



2012 ohio supreme court campaign

in 2012, third time, o neill ran ohio supreme court. won two-way primary against fanon rucker, judge on hamilton county municipal court. o neill received 72% of vote , carried 1 of ohio s 88 counties. in general election, o neill defeated incumbent robert cupp 4 percent. o neill ran on budget of $4000 personal funds, campaign called no money nobody , highlighted in tube video twin sons.



2018 ohio gubernatorial campaign

on october 29, 2017, o neill announced join democratic primary ohio governor. during announcement, laid out platform of minimum wage increases, tax incentives solar power, mental health care expansion , marijuana legalization in ohio. less week later announced recuse himself new supreme court cases , resign february 7, filing deadline due potential ethical conflicts.

on november 17, 2017, o neill stirred controversy posting on facebook regarding allegations of sexual assault against u.s. senator al franken. referred calling franken resign dogs of war , decried national feeding frenzy against age-old sexual indiscretions. o neill went on claim had been in sexual relationships approximately fifty women. in response these posts, communications director resigned campaign. multiple state officials, including ohio chief justice maureen o connor, former state representative , fellow gubernatorial candidate connie pillich, dayton mayor , fellow gubernatorial candidate nan whaley, , lieutenant governor mary taylor, criticized o neill s comments, pillich , whaley calling him resign position associate justice. o neill called critics lighten , saying intended elevate discussion on sexual assault. however, on november 19, issued apology remarks.
