carillon in munttoren hammers automatic chimes on outside of bells


the carillon made in 1668 pieter hemony, added new bells instrument , brother françois had made earlier tower of amsterdam stock exchange in 1651. made bronze drum automatic music announce strike of hour , half hour bell. chimes on quarter short melody. old drum still in function. in 1873, original baton keyboard removed carillon, in favor of changes clockwork mechanism. since year munt clock had minute arm. in 1960 when carillon restored petit & fritsen aarle rixtel, baton keyboard manual playing system re-installed. of original smaller hemony bells have been damaged on years pollution traffic round tower , have been replaced new bells in 1959 , 1993. original smaller hemony bells on display in amsterdam museum. current carillon consists of 38 bells (2 more original carillon had). 13 original hemony bells remained. mechanism causes bells chime every quarter of hour. twice year pins on drum changed city carilloneur. weekly on saturdays, between 2 , 3 p.m., gideon bodden, amsterdam city carillonneur gives live concert on bells.
