in 1997, group of 9 men went public accusations had been abused youths , young men maciel while studying under him in spain , rome in 1940s , 1950s. group, included respectable academics , former priests, lodged formal charges @ vatican in 1998. told following year congregation of doctrine of faith, headed cardinal joseph ratzinger, future pope benedict xvi, not prosecute maciel because of age.


in january 2005 maciel stepped down head of order. few days before john paul ii died, ratzinger announced intention of removing filth church; many believed referring maciel. after investigation had been re-opened ratzinger, vatican requested maciel withdraw active ministry. in may 2006, ratzinger, pope benedict xvi, disciplined him: congregation doctrine of faith asked maciel live reserved life of penitence , prayer, relinquishing form of public ministry. canonical trial ruled out, officially because of advanced age , poor health. in january 2006 maciel stepped down head of legion of christ , tendered leadership long-time follower Álvaro corcuera.


in 2007 order told remove obedience vows requiring religious never criticize superiors , inform on dissent within order. maciel moved rome house shared other priests in jacksonville, florida, united states, died in 2008. never made apologies , continued deny allegations. corcuera apologized victims both maciel s actions , inaction of others.
