the font, in john keats baptised


in 1710, parishioners petitioned parliament permission rebuild church on site, nothing done. in 1723 church found irreparable , parishioners petitioned again. having obtained act of parliament, set temporary building in churchyard, , began rebuild church. first stone laid in 1725, , new building consecrated in 1728, though not completed until next year. designer james gold. or gould. during construction, foundations of original anglo-saxon church discovered.


to provide striking frontage towards bishopsgate, architect placed tower @ east end, ground floor, pediment on exterior, forming chancel. east end , tower faced stone, while rest of church brick, stone dressings.


the interior divided nave , aisles composite columns, nave being barrel vaulted. church found dark, large west window created, largely obscured organ installed in front of in 1764. in 1820 lantern added centre of roof.


the church designated grade ii* listed building on 4 january 1950.


the church suffered minor bomb damage in second world war , subsequently in 1993 bishopsgate bombing.
