imperial period
naha airfield constructed in 1933 oroku naval air base, air base of imperial japanese navy (ijn). in 1936 control of air base transferred japanese ministry of communications , formally renamed naha airfield. in 1942 control of air base again reverted ijn, reverted name of installation oroku naval air base. facility captured united states during world war ii in battle of okinawa on 1 april 1945.
us period
after world war ii installation became major united states air force (usaf) base under operational control of pacific air forces (pacaf), , known naha air base (naha ab). installation became joint military-civilian air field in 1954 resumption of civilian air service between tokyo , okinawa. usaf ended use of naha ab on 31 may 1971 , control of civil aviation transferred japanese ministry of transportation, established naha airport on site; control of military air field officially transferred japan air self-defense force in 1979. of 2015, lt. colonel george w. mickey, last military base commander @ naha ab.
post-us period
japanese f-15s have been stationed there, second squadron of f-15s added in 2014.
