the chetwynd viaduct carried line on valley , main bandon road (now n71) between townlands of chetwynd , rochfordstown 2 miles (3 km) southwest of cork city. designed charles nixon (a former pupil of i.k. brunel) , built between 1849 , 1851 fox, henderson , co, built crystal palace in london.


the 100 feet (30 m) cast iron ribs cast on site. when in situ had transverse diagonal bracing , lattice spandrels supported deck of iron plates. these in turn supported permanent way.the viaduct 91 feet (28 m) high, has 4 110 feet (34 m) spans, each span composed of 4 cast iron arched ribs, carried on masonry piers 20 feet (6 m) thick , 30 feet (9 m) wide. overall span between end abutments 500 feet (150 m).


the structure damaged in irish civil war in 1922, subsequently repaired. in regular use until line closed in 1961, though recovery trains continued use during dismantling of line until @ least 1965. bulk of decking in place late 1970, other @ ends, subsequently removed safety reasons.
