The Viewliner Aerotrain (GM)

on june 26, 1957, narrow-gauge santa fe , disneyland viewliner (billed disneyland fastest miniature train in world ) commenced operation. 2 separate trains, designed , built scale replicas of futuristic aerotrain, traveled figure-eight track through parts of tomorrowland , fantasyland parallel portion of dlrr main line. tomorrowland train featured cars named planets while cars of fantasyland train named after various disney characters.


the modern, streamlined trains placed in service represent future of rail travel in contrast steam-powered dlrr represented past. motive power each train consisted of integral head-end unit driven oldsmobile rocket v8 gasoline engine. oldsmobile furnished windscreen, doors , instrument console each of 2 5,000 lb (2,300 kg) locomotives. attraction operated until september 15, 1958, when construction began on matterhorn , submarine voyage; disneyland monorail system took place of viewliner in june of following year.
