Hōkai-ji Hōkai-ji (Kamakura)

the man later become first of ashikaga shoguns, ashikaga takauji, given emperor go-daigo order build new temple, today s hōkai-ji, in spot in komachi, move there remains of clan , make new hōjō funeral temple. (tōshō-ji rebuilt used stand.) particular area chosen because had been until 1333 hōjō clan s komachi residence. later, because locals claimed neighborhood still haunted hōjō ghosts, shrine called tokusō gongen erected within temple placate them. shrine still stands next hōkai-ji s main hall.

this komachi residence of hōjō clan used stand. starting [second regent] hōjō yoshitoki, regents lived here. [last regent] hōjō takatoki party here day , night , would, other vassals, toss dengaku performer mountain of hitatare (a type of garment) , hakama reward. mansion destroyed fire during nitta yoshisada s invasion of kamakura in 1333. today s hōkai-ji built here in 1335 ashikaga takauji. temple built here hōjō s funeral temple soothe resentment of takatoki , clan, had been enshrined @ tōshō-ji.



after failure of emperor go-daigo s kenmu restoration , consequent fall power, hōkai-ji came under protection of ashikaga takauji himself. temple s shichidō garan completed around 1353. temple destroyed fire in 1538. @ beginning of edo period, tenkai, founder of kan ei-ji, asked shogun tokugawa ieyasu if temple supported , maintained state.
