on 31 january 1940 andes left gourock carrying 3,400 people on trooping voyage pacific ocean. called @ marseille, port said, colombo, singapore, , reached hong kong on 2 march 1940.


andes turned south new zealand, reached wellington on 20 march , left lyttelton on 1 may. 1 of 7 large troop ships formed convoy 3. others cunard-white star liners rms aquitania, mauretania , queen mary , canadian pacific liners rms empress of britain, empress of canada , empress of japan. admiral-class battlecruiser hms hood led 3 s escorts. between them 7 troop ships brought 17,576 military personnel uk via cape town , freetown, of whom 1,508 sailed on andes. @ cape town 100 people joined andes, many of them sleeping on deck. there uk averaged 20 ⁄2 knots (38 km/h) , @ times reached 24 knots (44 km/h). 3 reached clyde on 16 june.
