dunkirkmax  : maximum allowable beam = 45 m / loa 289 m. max (175,000 dwt approx) eastern harbour lock in port of dunkirk (france)

mini-bulkers prevalent in category of small vessels capacity of under 10,000 dwt. mini-bulkers carry 500 2,500 tons, have single hold, , designed river transport. built able pass under bridges , have small crews of 3 8 people.


handysize , handymax ships general purpose in nature. these 2 segments represent 71% of bulk carriers on 10,000 dwt , have highest rate of growth. partly due new regulations coming effect put greater constraints on building of larger vessels. handymax ships typically 150–200 m in length , 52,000 – 58,000 dwt 5 cargo holds , 4 cranes. these ships general purpose in nature.

capesize ships large traverse panama canal , must round cape horn travel between pacific , atlantic oceans. earlier, capesize ships not traverse suez , needed go around cape of hope. recent deepening of suez canal 66 ft (20 m) permits capesize ships pass through it.


capesize bulkers specialized: 93% of cargo iron ore , coal. ships on great lakes waterway exceed panamax dimensions limited use on great lakes cannot pass through smaller st. lawrence seaway ocean. large ore carriers , large bulk carriers subset of capesize category reserved vessels on 200,000 dwt. carriers of size designed carry iron ore.
