dunn s family origins modest. born in paisley near glasgow on 22 september 1833 john dunn, local shopkeeper, , isabella chalmers.


dunn married in south africa in 1859 sarah elizabeth howse (1 may 1830 – 2 february 1919), daughter of james howse (1796–1852), of grahamstown, cape colony, , sarah ann dold (1803–1881). james howse emigrated algoa bay, south africa oxfordshire in 1820. started off labourer, later owned farm leeuwfontein . killed in ambush on way farm on new year s day 1852.


education , training

it suggested dunn received earliest education @ home, although there indications attended school in working-class west end district of paisley. @ age of fourteen dunn became apprentice @ local accountant s office. in view of fact elder brothers – william youngest – went work in spinning , weaving, seems reasonable surmise dunn, through intelligence , education, able break free social environment.


career

dunn emigrated south africa in 1852, supported friend of father s, local member of parliament william barbour. landed in algoa bay. entered firm of mackie & co. of port elizabeth. after 2 years, still twenty-one years old, offered partnership in firm. 6 years later, in 1860, dunn succeeded deceased partner sole proprietor of business.


over time, dunn built large worldwide trading empire south african base. later returned great britain , controlled businesses london. dunn senior partner in firms of william dunn & co. of broad street avenue, london ec; mackie, dunn, & co. of port elizabeth; w. dunn & co. of durban; , in dunn & co. of east london. director of royal exchange assurance co. , of union discount co. , chairman of home , foreign insurance co.
