after overnight rains, 4 players shared 54-hole lead: schlee, jerry heard, 1963 champion julius boros, , 1960 winner arnold palmer. after 76 (+5) on saturday, miller started final round 6 strokes back, in four-way tie 13th place @ 3 strokes on par, , few gave him chance of winning. miller birdied first 4 holes, after bogey @ eighth, did not appear on brink of greatest round in u.s. open history.


but birdied 4 of next 5 holes, , after par @ 14 tied lead palmer, boros, , tom weiskopf. @ 15th hole, miller hit approach 10 feet (3 m) , converted birdie take solo possession of lead. after lipping out 20-foot (6 m) birdie putt @ 18 (for 62), miller carded first round of 63 in major championship history. finishing on hour ahead of last pairing, miller waited see if match him. palmer fell out of contention 3 consecutive bogeys finish in tie fourth. boros , heard both shot 73 , finished in tie seventh. schlee had chance tie miller, 40-footer (12 m) birdie @ last stayed out.


in shooting 63, miller hit 18 greens in regulation , needed 29 putts. ten of approach shots wound within 15 feet (4.6 m), while 5 within 6 feet (1.8 m). score more remarkable given 3 other players managed break 70 on day.
