dr. louis slotin, physicist @ los alamos research center, fatally injured during experiment subcritical nuclear assembly , plutonium core , 2 halves of beryllium sphere. purpose measure increase in radiation 2 hemispheres (which deflected neutrons plutonium) moved closer together. @ 3:20 pm, screwdriver slipped , 2 beryllium pieces came together, causing critical reaction. slotin knocked halves apart, saving other 7 men in room, while absorbing lethal dose of radiation radiologist described 3-d sunburn cells of body. slotin died 9 days later.
