the ligule short , blunt


it grows 19–59 inches tall, leaves 17 inches long ,  ⁄2 inch broad. leaves hairless, rolled rather folded, , lower sheaths turn dark brown.


it has no stolons or rhizomes, , no auricles.


the flowerhead  2 ⁄4–6 inches long ,  ⁄4– ⁄2 inches broad, densely packed spikelets. flowers june until september. stamen pink.


the ligule short , blunt.


it grows in heavy soil, , noted resistance cold , drought, , ability grow in dry upland or poor sandy soils. in pasture tends overwhelmed more competitive grasses. after cutting grows slowly.
