in years following world war ii, of remaining european colonies gained independence, , became republics. 2 largest colonial powers france , united kingdom. republican france encouraged establishment of republics in former colonies. united kingdom attempted follow model had earlier settler colonies of creating independent commonwealth realms still linked under same monarchy. while of settler colonies , smaller states of caribbean retained system, rejected newly independent countries in africa , asia, revised constitutions , became republics.


britain followed different model in middle east; installed local monarchies in several colonies , mandates including iraq, jordan, kuwait, bahrain, oman, yemen , libya. in subsequent decades revolutions , coups overthrew number of monarchs , installed republics. several monarchies remain, , middle east part of world several large states ruled monarchs complete political control.
