pre world war ii

the 370th air expeditionary wing constituted 1st transport group in 1933. regular army inactive unit, assigned reserve personnel in 1934 training purposes. february may 1934, group provisionally organized @ columbus, ohio.


in 1937, group consolidated 10th observation group, constituted in 1933 never activated. consolidated group designated 10th transport group , activated on 20 may 1937. original squadrons 1st, 2d, 3d, , 4th transport squadrons. provided single headquarters these squadrons, had been assigned various air depots in united states. group headquarters , 1 of squadrons located @ wright-patterson air force base, ohio. operated single-engine bellanca c-27 airbus , twin-engine douglas c-33 transports part of logistics organization of air corps on routes in , alaska , canal zone, transporting supplies, materiel, , personnel.


in may 1941, 2 of group s squadrons reassigned provide cadres newly forming transport groups air corps expanded. 3d transport squadron reassigned 63d transport group, while 4th transport squadron reassigned 62d transport group left group 2 of original squadrons, plus 5th transport squadron, had activated under group in 1939.

on april 30, 1942, group transferred air transport command (later troop carrier command) (i tcc) , redesignated 10th troop carrier group 2 months later. converted douglas c-47 skytrain aircraft, flew other military models of douglas dc-3. after transfer group acted operational training unit (otu), otus oversized units trained cadres satellite troop carrier groups. in 1943 group given additional duty of acting replacement training unit training replacement aircrews. in february 1943, last of group s original squadrons, 1st , 2d troop carrier squadrons (tcs) deployed cbi theater , assigned tenth air force. following month, replaced 307th , 308th tcss. during next 2 years, group moved various tcc stations, while squadrons located elsewhere. squadrons except 38th tcs, located @ laurinburg-maxton army air base, north carolina colocated group headquarters 1944.


the army air forces found standard military units, based on relatively inflexible tables of organization proving less adapted performing training mission. accordingly, more functional system adopted in each base organized separate numbered unit. result, 10th disbanded in april 1944 , mission, personnel, , equipment combined support organizations @ alliance army air field , transferred 805th aaf base unit (replacement training unit, troop carrier), while of 38th tcs transferred 810th aaf base unit (combat crew training school, troop carrier).
