History St Aidan's College, Durham

the college has origins in small group of women, known home students, first allowed study @ durham in 1895. @ time, , indeed until second world war, considered unsuitable female students live in lodgings: either had members of college or live @ home. numbers never large; example, in 1936 there five. however, substantial increase in number of female students after 1945 meant former group of home students reorganised, emerging st aidan s society in 1947.


the st aidan s society had offices @ 24 north bailey (now bar , club of durham union society). of students lived in shincliffe hall, , others in lodgings. common room found in 50 north bailey , chapel services held @ church of st mary-le-bow. first principal ethleen scott, having been censor of female home students since 1937.


in 1961 st aidan s reconstituted full council college (meaning governing council sub-committee of university council, university s governing body). moved present buildings on elvet hill in 1964, becoming 1 of first of university s hill colleges. college buildings in modernist style, having been designed architect sir basil spence , arranged in semi-circular arrangement surrounding central lawn. original design intended represent hand of god holding jewel, curved corridors fingers, straight corridors thumb, , small chapel jewel. however, financial constraints prevented chapel ever being built , later extensions straight section did not follow original idea.


in 1963, scott succeeded principal dame enid russell-smith, handed on irene hindmarsh in 1970. during tenure principal agreed st aidan s should become mixed college. first male students admitted in 1981. john ashworth took on in 1998, before becoming dean of colleges in 2007, @ point susan frenk became acting principal. in 2008 work on improvements extensions started. aim turn previous fresher rooms ensuite accommodation finalists , postgraduates. in february 2009 students allowed tour newly refurbished extensions, named elizabeth pease house.
