in 1999, state of florida heard petition thomas harrison provenzano, death row inmate, argued electric chair cruel , unusual punishment. during proceedings, rev. glen dickson, medina s pastor, testified saw flames rising out of medina s head, smelled acrid smell , saw medina take 3 labored breaths after electric current chair had been turned off , strap holding him in had been loosened.
patricia mccusker, assistant superintendent of work camp @ florida state prison, testified. said saw medina s left hand tighten current being applied. corroborated dickson s observation of smoke , flames coming medina s head , smell, said burning smell. mccusker claimed saw movements in medina s chest after current had been turned off, claimed contractions of chest muscle did not imply breathing.
