history
founding

the english college, douai founded in 1568 forced leave france in 1795 following french revolution. part of college settled temporarily @ crook hall northwest of durham. in 1804 bishop william gibson began build @ ushaw moor, 4 miles west of durham. these buildings, designed james taylor, opened st cuthbert s college in 1808. there steady expansion during nineteenth century new buildings put cater expanding number of clerical , secular students. in 1847, newly built chapel, designed augustus welby northmore pugin opened. followed big library , exhibition hall designed joseph hansom, 1849–1851. junior house, designed distinguished architect, peter paul pugin, added in 1859. st cuthbert’s chapel, designed dunn , hansom, opened in 1884, replacing earlier 1 augustus welby northmore pugin, seminary had outgrown. refectory designed , built e. w. pugin. final development came in 1960s opening of new east wing, providing additional classrooms , single bedrooms 75 students. main college buildings grade ii listed, college chapel grade ii* , chapel of st michael grade i.


university of durham

the college became licensed hall of residence of university of durham in 1968. independent of university offered courses validated university, , both church , lay students studied @ college. junior house closed in 1972, younger students being transferred st joseph s college, upholland in lancashire.


21st century

in 2002, college rejected report roman catholic hierarchy should merge st mary s college, oscott, near birmingham. however, in october 2010 announced college close in 2011 due shortage of vocations in roman catholic church, , site might sold. following detailed feasibility study college s trustees , durham university (and support durham county council , english heritage) during 2011; announced in january 2012 durham business school temporarily relocate college during rebuilding of school’s buildings in durham. seen first step in long-term education-based vision site. university have agreed catalogue , archive ushaw library , inventory other collections ensure preservation , specialist conservation, view creating proposed ushaw centre catholic scholarship , heritage.
