the economic , social council (ecosoc) assists general assembly in promoting international economic , social co-operation , development. ecosoc has 54 members, elected general assembly three-year term. president elected one-year term , chosen amongst small or middle powers represented on ecosoc. council has 1 annual meeting in july, held in either new york or geneva. viewed separate specialized bodies co-ordinates, ecosoc s functions include information gathering, advising member nations, , making recommendations. owing broad mandate of co-ordinating many agencies, ecosoc has @ times been criticized unfocused or irrelevant.


ecosoc s subsidiary bodies include united nations permanent forum on indigenous issues, advises un agencies on issues relating indigenous peoples; united nations forum on forests, co-ordinates , promotes sustainable forest management; united nations statistical commission, co-ordinates information-gathering efforts between agencies; , commission on sustainable development, co-ordinates efforts between un agencies , ngos working towards sustainable development. ecosoc may grant consultative status non-governmental organizations; 2004, more 2,200 organizations had received status.
