history

toyism can split in 2 different periods, period 1992 until 2000 , 2002 until present.


1992-2000

a couple of months after manifesto written, 2 other artists form emmen joined movement. in first period themes worked out in surrealistic manner , returning presence of fixed icons (computer, space shuttle , teddy-bear) in paintings. these icons represented attending artists. first exhibition on february 24, 1993 in het veenpark. 1 year after foundation work exhibited in new york city. @ base figurative style uniform areas of colour , simplistic elements inspired super mario , game console nintendo. after triumvirate fell apart, founder dejo decided make world-trip , gets inspired make toyism more international , open.


2002

after world-trip dejo rewrote manifesto , gave other artists access join movement. 2002 group of artists grows exponentially , artists every corner of earth decide participate (thailand, south africa, malaysia, united states, iceland, mexico, peru, italy, australia, canada, belgium, netherlands, romania).


present

present day toyists have created 777 works of art, varying paintings sculptures , buildings. toyists had permanent studio/gallery in emmen until 2015. in same year relocated headquarters city of groningen. have gallery in villa heymans next groninger museum.
