before ice age, island formed part of crocker range mass of sandstone , sedimentary rock on mainland. however, 1 million years ago, melting ice brought changes in sea level , parts of mainland cut off sea form islands of gaya island, sapi, manukan, mamutik , sulug. evidence of can seen exposed sandstone of coastline forming cliffs, caves, honeycombs , deep crevices.
