after series of roundabouts a4 continues uphill past ministry of defence site , descends steeply village of box. road box tunnel, built part of great western railway, can seen clearly. road bears right @ junction a365 melksham, , criss-crosses main railway line far roundabout @ bathford forms junction a363 towards bradford-on-avon. road after roundabout becomes dual carriageway until a4 diverts left down slip road, , remainder becomes a46; section, 3-mile (4.8 km) £45 million dual-carriageway batheaston/swainswick bypass, opened in summer 1996, highly controversial both @ planning , @ construction stages.


the route enters outskirts of bath passing training grounds of bath rfc. after series of traffic light controlled junctions, a4 continues straight ahead meets a36. passes hedgemead park , down paragon before crossing george street , queen square.
