from 1852 1855 van dorn stationed @ east pascagoula branch military asylum in mississippi, serving secretary treasurer of post. spent remainder of 1855 stationed @ new orleans, louisiana, briefly on recruiting service again, , in garrison @ jefferson barracks. promoted captain in 2nd cavalry on march 3, 1855. van dorn , 2nd on frontier duty @ fort belknap , camp cooper, texas, in 1855 , 1856, scouting in northern texas in 1856, , fought minor skirmish comanche on july 1, 1856. assigned camp colorado, texas, in 1856 1857, scouting duty again in 1857, returned camp colorado in 1857 1858, , stationed @ fort chadbourne located in coke county, texas, in 1858.


van dorn saw further action against seminoles , comanches in indian territory. wounded 4 separate times there, including when commanded expedition against comanches , took 2 arrows (one in left arm , in right side, damaging stomach , lung) @ battle of wichita village on october 1, 1858. not expected live, van dorn recovered in 5 weeks. van dorn led 6 companies of cavalry , company of scouts recruited brazos reservation in spring campaign against comanche in 1859. located camp of buffalo hump in kansas in valley erroneously identified nescutunga (or nessentunga), , defeated them on may 13, 1859, killing 49, wounding 5 , capturing 32 women. served @ fort mason, texas, in 1859 , 1860. while @ fort mason, van dorn promoted rank of major on june 28, 1860. on leave of absence u.s. army rest of 1860 , 1861.
