the vicinity of neenach stop on major transportation routes between northern california , southern california since @ least 1820s.

the original name present day neenac puyutsiwamǝŋ. in kitanemuk language. spanish referred ojo de la vaca, or eye of cow.

an 19th century name area cow springs (34°46′22″n 118°37′17″w / 34.77273°n 118.62134°w / 34.77273; -118.62134), mile southwest of today s neenach school. el camino viejo, passed laguna chico lopez north via willow springs canyon, west water @ aquaje lodoso, cow springs , on tejon pass. later shorter route followed stockton - los angeles road , butterfield overland mail between elizabeth lake , gorman. instead of going north went westward via san andreas rift oakgrove canyon north via pine canyon antelope valley , cow springs. french johns station, 14 miles east of gorman, near cow springs provided way station stage line, teamsters , other travelers.

neenach founded in 1870s danish settlers neenah, wisconsin. in 1888, post office established, john a. coovert first postmaster. in september 1905 christian clausen named postmaster.


james anderson filed homestead claim 160 acres (647,000 m²) @ present-day state route 138 , 300th street west in 1887. had county contract maintain , improve roads in antelope valley far 3 points.


construction of los angeles aqueduct between 1905 , 1913, brought water distant owens valley san fernando valley, important area.


on july 13, 1917, chief water engineer william mulholland of city of los angeles, builder of aqueduct, received word line had been broken. went neenach , found 60-foot rupture. ordered additional surveillance, saw arrest of 1 man, employee of rival los angeles gas , electric company. suspect later released.


james anderson became line rider or patrolman on aqueduct: had shut down tunnel periodically check condition. checked surface verify none of aqueduct’s opponents had damaged it. harry womersley, england way of illinois, resident worked on aqueduct—the 12 miles fairmont neenach.


gold discovered in hills south of community in 1930s. “oh suzanna” mine produced $7 million on few years of operation.


in 1970s, neenach lively, 1 resident told reporter. there community-wide potluck dinners , 80 members in local 4-h club. since then, said, many of kids moved away able.
