Severe Tropical Storm Nicky–Helma 2003–04 South-West Indian Ocean cyclone season








a weak low pressure area evident within monsoon trough on march 2 in eastern periphery of basin. thunderstorms fluctuated around weak circulation, crossed 90° e australian basin on march 7. on next day, system became better organized, , bom designated tropical low. fueled warm waters , moderate decreasing wind shear, low strengthened moved southwestward around ridge. bom upgraded low tropical cyclone nicky on march 9, west of cocos islands. on next day, storm crossed 90° e south-west indian ocean, whereupon renamed helma.


a central dense overcast organized on helma s center, briefly developing eye feature on march 11. day, mfr estimated peak winds of 110 km/h (70 mph), making helma severe tropical storm. jtwc, designated system tropical cyclone 17s, upgraded helma equivalent of minimal hurricane peak winds of 120 km/h (75 mph). approaching trough increased wind shear , caused storm weaken, leaving center exposed late on march 12. after turning south, helma turned southwest weakened depression, later turning southeast ahead of cold front. circulation dissipated on march 16 without affecting land.
