Musical Notation Sanshin



sheet music sanshin written in unique transcription system called kunkunshi (okinawan: 工工四 pronounced [kuŋkunshiː]). named first 3 notes of chinese melody known during development. creator believed mongaku terukina or student choki yakabi (屋嘉比 朝寄, yakabi chōki) in mid-1700s. set of kanji used represent specific finger positions. unlike european musical notation, kunkunshi can interpreted through sanshin.
