the a4 continues along high street on way out of marlborough via bridewell street , bath road. road passes underneath covered bridge links morris house of marlborough college north block of same establishment. college independent boarding school established in 1843 using of buildings remained after demise coaching trade, saw original castle inn coaching house close.


the route continues westward through village of fyfield, across overton hill there parking area @ start of ridgeway national trail , through village of west kennet. on leaving west kennet there parking lay-bys visitors can walk short distance road neolithic west kennet long barrow, forms part of avebury world heritage site. 1 mile further along a4 silbury hill, part of avebury world heritage site. purpose built car park located beyond hill on right travelling westward. route approaches beckhampton roundabout, forms intersection a361, passes waggon & horses inn, built in 1669 profit increasing trade along old bath road. mentioned in pickwick papers novel charles dickens.

the route continues past cherhill , cherhill white horse can seen left , nearby lansdowne monument. route descends down labour in vain hill through village of quemerford , market town of calne. heading towards town centre, road crosses double mini roundabout, 1 exit forming junction a3102 melksham. follows new road , passes old coaching inn of lansdowne strand. on way out of calne, road goes along curzon street, , chilvester hill @ roundabout northern part of a3102 splits off towards lyneham.


the a4 descends steeply before climbing again black dog hill past bowood house estate. old road used pass through derry hill, new road, called @ point, indicates village bypassed. there follows steep descent junction a342 devizes road , sharp right turn past lysley arms towards chippenham.


on outskirts of chippenham large roundabout, old a4 used carry straight on down london road , causeway town centre, has since been pedestrianised. traffic turns left go round pewsham estate relief road called pewsham way, classified a4 route. after 4 roundabouts, a4 turns left in southerly direction @ roundabout, past chippenham magistrates court. route heads downhill on river avon on avenue la fleche, named after 1 of chippenham’s twin towns, bridge centre roundabout.
