born on 1 april 1946 in new delhi, kumar completed schooling @ local schools in 1962 before joining st. stephen s college, delhi graduated in science honors in 1965. continued studies @ university of delhi , after earning master s degree in physics in 1967, moved pursue doctoral studies under supervision of a. b. harris @ university of pennsylvania secure phd in 1972. subsequently, returned india start career member of faculty of physics department @ university of roorkee (present-day indian institute of technology roorkee). served institution 16 years , when jawaharlal nehru university established school of physical sciences, returned native place take position of professor @ school in 1988. in between, had short spell in germany alexander von humboldt fellow during 1978–79.


kumar maintained association jnu rest of life , during return university on 25 january 2016, fell ill. died next day @ local hospital, @ age of 69, survived son, sharad, , daughter. jyoti.
