this station opened on october 29, 1989 along entire ind 63rd street line. q train served station on weekdays , b train stopped there on weekends; both services used sixth avenue line. first couple of months after station opened, jfk express kennedy airport served station until discontinued in 1990. 63rd street tunnel had gained notoriety tunnel both during planning , after opening due lack of connections in queens, being 1500 feet short of queens plaza station. lexington avenue–63rd street third-to-last stop before 21st street–queensbridge, line s northern terminus; 21st street station not connected other subway station or line in queens.


on july 22, 2001, concurrent closure of ind sixth avenue line tracks of manhattan bridge, b , q train service station ceased , replaced full-time shuttle. @ time, northern tracks of bridge closed allow bridge repairs take place. southern bmt broadway line tracks reopened allowing half of tracks on bridge remain open. on december 16, 2001, 63rd street connector, built connect ind 63rd street line , ind queens boulevard line officially opened, , f train rerouted serve station @ times, still day. when happened, free metrocard out-of-system transfer lexington avenue–59th street station added. provide transfer irt lexington avenue line f train customers such connection had been provided @ lexington avenue–53rd street station along previous routing of f train.


the mta s plans second avenue subway service extended q train (and selected rush-hour n train short turn trips), running via bmt broadway line, along bmt 63rd street line serve station, beyond trains turn north , run along second avenue line 96th street. new service pattern put effect on january 1, 2017.
