russo noted lack of strong community-based publication while travelling on maui. @ time completing degree studies @ chico state university building strong sales background in print media during employment local paper in chico, california. teamed classmate d antonio after d antonio s music group, sunset red concluded 2 tours of lahaina in 1996. within year, 2 chico, california transplants moved maui start independent community publication. maui time established free , independent voice represent wide variety of views, opinions, lifestyles, , rich host culture maui offers.


publisher tommy russo grew maui time weekly publication maui news, community features, arts , entertainment focus. maui time gained admission association of alternative newsweeklies in 2004.


after 4 years editor-in-chief , art director, mark d antonio left publication return career in music , design.
