biography
childhood , education

aleksandrov born in saint petersburg in worker s family of russian ethnicity, became homeless during russian civil war. in 1924-1930, studied communist philosophy in borisoglebsk , tambov , transferred moscow institute of history , philosophy. became member of communist party in 1928. after graduating in 1932, aleksandrov remained institute graduate studies, becoming professor, deputy director , institute s scientific secretary.

in 1938, @ height of great purge, aleksandrov made deputy head of publishing department of executive committee of comintern. in 1939 appointed deputy head of soviet communist party s central committee s propaganda , agitation department , @ same time put in charge of central committee s moscow-based higher party school, headed until 1946.


in september 1940 aleksandrov made head of central committee s propaganda , agitation department, replacing andrei zhdanov who, secretary of central committee, retained overall supervision on communist propaganda in ussr. in 1941 aleksandrov made candidate (non-voting) member of central committee and, on 19 march 1946, member of orgburo. in 1946 elected member of soviet academy of sciences.


1947 demotion

throughout career, aleksandrov closely associated georgy malenkov, 1 of joseph stalin s closest advisors. once malenkov began lose influence zhdanov in 1946, aleksandrov s position became shaky well. in june 1947, aleksandrov s textbook history of western european philosophy (1945) denounced on stalin s orders overvaluing georg wilhelm friedrich hegel s contributions , underestimating contributions made russian philosophers. aleksandrov lost propaganda , agitation department position mikhail suslov , supporters purged. nonetheless, aleksandrov retained orgburo post , made director of soviet academy of sciences institute of philosophy. remained there after zhdanov s demotion , subsequent death in 1948 , malenkov s return power.


after stalin

when georgy malenkov became next soviet premier after joseph stalin s death in march 1953, made aleksandrov minister of culture of soviet union on 9 march 1954. after malenkov lost position in power struggle soviet communist party leader nikita khrushchev in february 1955, aleksandrov fired on 10 march 1955. sent minsk, put in charge of section of dialectical , historical materialism of belarus academy of sciences institute of philosophy , law. spent rest of life working on sociology , history , died in moscow in 1961 @ age 53.
